PERFORMERS & SCHEDULE

As it has been for the past 2 years, we will be featuring 2 stages playing music simultaneously on Friday and Saturday nights.  The FIRE Stage (commonly known as the Main Stage from years past) will have the high energy, beat-based electronica you have come to expect with a large signature dance floor upon which to stomp your feet.  In addition, Esthetic Evolution is proud to feature the artistic decorations of Mate' Mataus' SpaceShaping.  Prepare to feast your eyes and ears on the on an all encompassing dance and musical experience at the FIRE Stage.

This year's AIR Stage (commonly known as the Chill Area from years past) is taking on an experimental twist to its musical renderings.  While this will still be the place you want to go and rest your tired feet, surrounded by ambient and downtempo electronica, the first few hours of this stage will feature it's own antithesis in the form of fast paced, hard hitting dance music such as Drum & Bass and Breakcore.  As things settle down and the night progresses, the AIR Stage will nestle back into the mellow arena it is always destined to be.

The Flashbulb - Chicago, IL

[LIVE PA] IDM / Techno / Breakcore / Acid

An appropriate biography for Benn Jordan (the man behind The Flashbulb, Flexe, Q-bit, Acidwolf, and countless other pseudonyms) would be in the form of a stock ticker constantly scrolling up to date information on his multiple careers and endeavors. He is well known around the world in electronica for his abrasive trademarks multiplied with a level of diversity that makes just about anyones head spin. His catalog of releases is so extensive and obscure that there is no place on the internet that can accurately and completely list them. It also seems that Benn has replaced sleeping with film composing, and has recently mirrored his accomplishments in the film industry. But don’t be intimidated by his amount of work, the quality-for-quantity rule does not apply here. Pick any album out of this long discography and you’ll find that it has its own place, and sometimes its own genre.

Benn Jordan was born in The-Middle-Of-Nowhere, Georgia in 1978. At a young age he moved from an American Indian reservation to Chicago to live with his grandparents, and was fluent in music notation before his first day of grade school. By the time Benn was old enough to drive, he was not only teaching classical guitar, but he had also taken part in Chicagos explosive acid house and industrial scenes of the mid-nineties by releasing albums on obscure short-lived labels and lugging synthesizers into parties instead of turntables.

After his first tour in 1999, Jordan released the album M under the alias The Flashbulb that gained him an international following with little more promotion than word of mouth. Another significant point of Benn’s popularity was his release of a speaker-cone-tearing remix on Aphex Twins label Rephlex Records. Shortly thereafter came Drain Mode = ON on Germany’s Suburban Trash Records and many other releases that marked him as a key figure, if not a pioneer, in a genre well known today as breakcore. Other releases near the turn of the millennium include These Open Fields, which used raw emotion and atmosphere to break through to its listeners instead of impressive computer sequencing.

As the years passed the releases became more and more developed and diversified. In 2003 Alphabasic released Resent And The April Sunshine Shed, which featured a heavy Eastern influence complete with Benns own sitar playing. In early 2004 Sublight Records opened shop with Red Extensions Of Me which combined the ultimate homage of abrasive breakbeat sequencing with melodies recorded from guitars and basses rigged with MIDI pickups. 2004 also brought us another one of Benns aliases called Flexe, who released Programmable Love Songs Volume 1, a dance oriented album made with homemade software.

In live performances, The Flashbulb often raises the laptop performers bar by bringing midi guitars and foot-controlled heavy effect units along with him on tour. The occasional show brings the audience a vivid stage presence, but most of the time Benn shyly concentrates on his performance hidden behind gear, occasionally peeping out and smiling when applauded. That same timidity is often applied in almost all aspects of Jordans career. He rarely accepts interviews or media photographs, and in the few times words or his voice have appeared in his recordings, it is often verbally unrevealing or camouflaged behind effects processing. However luckily for his listeners, Jordan possesses the talent to make his instruments flawlessly speak for whatever emotion he wants to portray, be it sadness, happiness, rage, or just sheer technical boredom.

Judging from accomplishments and expectations hes made for himself, its hard imagine Benn Jordan not playing a significant role in everything he applies himself to. As his following and popularity continues to grow, so does his creative output and production. Dont let the lack of mainstream publicity fool you, Jordan has worked alongside everyone from Cylob to Elton John, and his name is attached to everything from computer software to feature films.

Sentient - San Francisco, CA

Psychedelic Trance

Brian Petterson (aka Sentient) is one of the foremost psychedelic trance DJs in California. A lover of trance since he was first exposed to it at a rave in Mexico City in 1994, Sentient has become addicted to the powerful sound of today's psytrance. When he plays, foremost in his mind is the music and the desire to guide people through it. A world traveler all of his life, his unique experiences living in Africa, Mexico and Israel (as well as trips to Europe and Southeast Asia) have given him a unique and optimistic outlook on life, and he channels his personality and energy into each set.

He describes his musical style as, "Psytrance for the dancer. A blend of slower, groovier, funky stuff and hard, crushing, psychedelic ragers. The kind of musical journey that captivates your mind, and makes you shake and sweat your ass off." His music collection ranges from full-on psytrance, to hypnotic progressive, to dreamy downtempo. He can play any timeslot, from a building opening set to a mid-night stomper to a beautiful sunrise journey, and his technical skills are on par with some of the best in the business.

Some of the acts that Sentient has played alongside are Hallucinogen, X-Dream, Shpongle, Deedrah, Astrix, Son Kite, GMS, Infected Mushroom, Pixel, Absolum, Chromatone, Protoculture, Shakta, Cosmosis, Space Tribe, Penta, Neuromoter, CPU, Bamboo Forest, Wizzy Noise, Astral Projection, and many many more.

Beaker vs Josh Craig - Salt Lake City, UT

Tech House / Tech Trance

Josh Craig has been playing for packed crowds for over Twelve years in Salt Lake City, Phoenix, Boise, and Los Angeles. He has had the opportunity to play along side such talented artists as Uberzone, Barry Weaver, Micro, Donald Glaud, DJ Dan, Cirrus, John Kelly, Mota, DRC, Robbie Hardkiss, Garth, and too many others to name. Josh first heard electronic dance music in September of '95 and was instantly hooked. He immediately surrounded himself in underground dance culture and bought his first set of DJ gear. With help of DJ beaker, Dan Newman, and Mike Burmister, Josh started his first club called "The Underground". At only 16 years old, it was quite the experience. It was just a small underground club, but it was a great way to get himself more involved in the scene. In the fall of '98 Josh and Beaker released their first mixed tape, entitled "Beaker vs. Josh Craig." After the release of the tape Josh and Beaker knew it had come time to step it up a level, and in '99 they started playing shows together on 4 turntables. This rapidly increased their popularity. Playing together gained them the respect of the DJ community and got them weekly bookings. In June of 2000 Josh and Beaker released "Tech Files 1.1". This CD was their first professional recording and showed their love for house music. This immediately sparked the interests of regional promoters and they got their first booking in Phoenix. Shortly after returning Josh decided to spend a year away from the scene and work on toning his skills. Josh had literally locked him self in his room for a year and when he came out he had taken things to a new level. In July of 2001 Josh and Beaker released "Tech Files 2.0" which once again showed their range in styles. After the release Josh decided to move to L.A. to go to school. With the seclusion of being in a new city and spending most of his time in school, Josh has been able to once again add to his bag of tricks. He thrives on "making his musical style centered around the dancers."

Robin Scott - Boise, ID

Dj Manos, J-Sun

& MC Anton Bomb - Seattle, WA

Acid House / Techno / Tech-House / Social Commentary

Initially arriving onto the Seattle scene around the turn of the century, dj Manos has been quietly making a name for himself in the Northwest. Gaining attention for his down & dirty acid house and techno sets -along with his taste for various strains of experimental, minimal, and downtempo electronica- Manos is a man that lives in his ears, able to stimulate the mind, open the heart, and shake the booty.

Taking his name from an obscure grade-B horror movie on an old episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000, dj MANOS has helped to nurture Seattle's electronic music scene and has worked extensively in many of the northwest's underground communities.

In addition to playing at just about every venue in Seattle, Manos has also performed at Burning Man, The Oracle Gatherings, Decibel Festival, Esthetic Evolution, Prosperity, Natural Mystic, Island Festival, Kinetic 2 and numerous other underground events throughout the Northwest. Having shared billing with such diverse names as dj Three, Phil Western, Q-Burns Abstract Message, Mike Monday, Doc Martin, Randall Jones, Bassnectar, Synth Club, Johnny Fiasco, JT Donaldson, Phutureprimative, The Funginears, and others, he is known to infect soundsystems with heady doses of warped alien funk.

J-Sun has been involved in the electronic music scene since 1994. After years of polishing his skills as a dj, in 2004, he launched the Seattle based record label and DJ crew, Innerflight Music. Since then, he's built up a following in the Northwest as an energetic performer with a deep crate and a heady get down style.

With an affinity for underground house & techno, J-Sun's sets are known for their potent programming and lucid mixology; certified to incite the dance floor. As a resident jock for Uniting Souls, he's played alongside performers such as Garth, Hipp-E, Derrick May, Adnan, Justin Martin, Chris Fortier, Mike Monday and Sunshine Jones (Dubtribe). Whether he's producing an event in the city or performing at one in the great outdoors, J-Sun has become a fixture in the Northwest's electronic music scene.

VOCALIST! CROWD MOTIVATOR! SOCIAL COMMENTATOR!

As an mc, ANTON BOMB sings, screams, chants and flows his original and often ironic lyrics in an amalgam of styles. His own voice during one track, a pitch-changing, multi-layered robot’s the next - all the while bending and blending elements of rock, rap, punk, pop, dancehall, spoken word and gospel into music that causes dancing seizures in even the coolest of hipsters!

Born in Chicago, raised in the South, and based in Seattle, ANTON BOMB has been an active member of the northwest dance music scene for over a decade! His current affiliations include the ceaseless, electro-crossover forerunners, Shameless (www.simplyshameless.com) and the infamous NAHA ARMY (www.nahaarmy.com). J Renegade vs DJ Sighanyde

Portland, OR

Aggressive Breaks / Electro House / Scratching

Born in Dallas TX, James's love for music began at a very young age. Originally a disciplined student of Classical Jazz, he was well-versed in the drums and trumpet. Any aspirations James had to continue playing jazz vanished once he moved to Portland, Oregon and bought his first house record. His 'Intoxicating' signature blend of Slammin' Electro-House, Bass Heavy Breaks and Glitchy Techno has left dancefloors begging for more in his 5 year DJ career and thus has landed him bookings in all over every major city in the Pacific Northwest and as far out as Dallas, TX. James has been featured on online radio stations such as afterhoursdjs.org, local radio stations in the Northwest such as KPSU AM in Portland and Seattle's c89.5 FM 'The Vortex'. Not only is James a talented DJ, but he's also the owner of 'Ground Breaking Events' a production company that has thrown many memorable events in Portland, Oregon such as Vibe Alive, Do you like bass?, Big Bang Theory, and Utopia just to name a few. His tremendous success resulted in the booking of Europe's own Brainbug, who's music was made famous in the film 'Night at the Roxbury'. J-Renegade has opened up for and or shared the bill with industry heavyweights such as Rabbit in the moon, DJ Bam Bam, Myagi, Dave Aude, Phil York, Tech Itch, DJ Venom, Kelly Reverb, Mike Balance, Jon Pegnato, Deep Voices, Sean Tyas, Deep Impact, SPL, Mars and more!

DJ Sighanyde, has been perfecting his own form of blend and balance on the turntables for close to 10 years now. In love with all music from an early age, it wasn't long before he found an even greater love in electronic music. He got his start in the amazing atmosphere of the underground Salt Lake City desert and warehouse scene of the late 90's. Picking up dj'ing quickly, it was not long before he started getting to play out shows under the notorious 13 Productions crew. Blasting out the sounds of hard acid, hard trance, NRG and breaks he rocked dancefloors all over the SLC valley and Idaho before finding his true groove with heavy acidy breakbeats and chunky house. Dubbing the sound 'Hardacidelectrofunk' and mastering the straight/broken beat syncopated fusion, he wasnt afraid to get dark and evil and yet spin it with the tastiest groove you can imagine. Long fluid mixes, EQ control, quick scratching and impeccable programming skills are what to expect from this kid. Sighanyde has shared billing with some of the biggest names in the industry, including DJ Micro, Freaky Chakra, DJ Craze, Diggabeats, DJ Monk, Trona, DJ Icey, Annalyze and Shortee just to name a few. After hooking up with Ground Breaking Events in Portland, Oregon in 2007, you can expect to see him rocking dancefloors all over the Northwest!

His promotion crew, Perennial Records, was responsible for bringing West Coast techno mainstays like Barry Weaver, Jon E Thin and Matt McCoy to town for the first time. As a DJ, he was always at the forefront of new music and specialized in long, technical mixes. You might remember him as the undisputed king of hoover sound in Idaho. After taking few years off, to find his new sound and true love for breaks he returned as Madmen. The energy and flow in his sets was there but there was still something missing. It took few shows to realize that the presence of Manic was still running thru his veins. Be there to witness the transformation from Madmen to Manic and the first produced track by Manic in collaboration with one and only Chris Le. Peak Hour Electro House / Breaks

Funk Collective is a collaboration between two locals with over a decade of mixing experience between them, McCabe Reed of W&F Events(Portland, OR), FunkSide Family(Portland, OR) and his own label Tekno Species Recordings(BOI), and Jack Thomas founder of Gnostic Entertainment(BOI). Both have dedicated much time and energy into the scene with past experience in Portland Oregon and Seattle Washington, these Northwest raised Dj's have brought their ambition and energy to Boise and began promoting club nights as soon as they could. Max Power - Boise, ID

Funky / Electro Breaks

Max Power is his name... and funky electro disco breaks his game. While attending his first underground parties ten years ago he was immediately drawn to the DJ. He loved the music, but wasn't a dancer so it was only a matter of time before he would end up behind the decks himself. Seven years later he has developed a profound love of breaks, and stacks his crate with the likes of Work, Lot 49, Ultra & Erase records. A house party favorite, he has provided the soundtrack to a countless number of unforgettable evenings. By day he runs a sushi bar, so free time is almost non-existent but if he has some you'll probably find him in his basement studio, or hosting yet another epic gathering of friends.

AIR STAGE PERFORMERS

YOUR SECRET FRIDAY NIGHT DJ!!!

Kettel - Groningen, Netherlands

[LIVE PA] Ambient / IDM

Reimer Eising is Kettel (1982), currently citizen of Groningen (Netherlands), elixer-brewing, camping-loving and musicmaking sorcerer-to-be. Part of the mysterious USA-based Kracfive label, where he released his debut album 'Dreim' (2001) and an vinyl/cd EP peculiarly titled 'Look At This, Ha! Ha! Ha!' (2003), containing Kettel-tracks from the past. Long forgotten songs, sung by gnomes and choirs containing crocodiles and blackbirds only. He performed live on the Eurosonic and Noorderslag festival in the Netherlands in january 2003, with his Kracfivian friend Christopher Graves (Colongib), playing a liveshow suitable for headnodders and dancing tomboys at the same time.

From the first Kettel cd the Plaid/Black Dog-comparison has always been there, and Eising's early work is indeed reminiscent of the playful and spun out melodies Plaid is so well-known for. More instrumental hiphop-related tracks appeared on the illustrious Planet-Mu label: a 7" entitled "Atomic Tadley" (march 2001) appeared in the 7"-series of the label, only 500 copies were pressed. This record is together with the Kracfive-releases probably the most looked-after Kettel record. Lucky trainspotters happen to find their copies on Ebay.  This 7" was not the only effort on Planet Mu. A 12" called "Tadley Management" appeared in early 2002. It is not clear if Kettel still has connections with this british cult-label.

In 2001 another 7" came out, this time on the scottish Mouthmoth label. The press, at least the reviewers who managed to pick up one of the 100 (!) copies, praised it's relaxing "backyard quality". On the flip side of this release Kettel's cat, Max, delivers a remix. People who try to find this record will be dissapointed: even Eising himself claims to be out of copies. A busy year it was, 2001, because an other EP was released. This time through the popular idm factory from the UK: Neo Ouija. 'Red Pear 12" saw daylight in september.

Until then always releasing his tunes abroad, Kettel was finally picked up in the Netherlands by DuB records (the sublabel of the electro smashing Clone records). His albumsampler 'Cenny' (2002) had this organic, folky sound, even often described as the 'typical Kettel-sound': always full of melody and catchy rhythms. The follow-up on DuB was the album, called 'Cenny Crush' (2002). This "heartwarm-yum" album was picked by the national press with a big smile, and many interviews followed in which Eising described his music as "electronic pop music" and called it his goal to achieve as much as melodic subtility as possible. Earlier in 2002 the album 'Smiling Little Cow' was released on Neo Ouija.

Side projects during all those years were remixes for Multiplex, Ontayso and Metametics, various compilation appearances on Neo Ouija, U-Cover and more. Also a split 12" came out on Civik Records, side A containing 2 Kettel tracks, side B had 2 tracks by Canada's own idm specialist Setzer. It's been said Kettel grew up in the countryside, and the birds and nature around him inspired him. Is it true? Eising: "Nobody knows what would happen if I lived in Africa, but I guess my music would still be folky, but then with the sounds of monkeys and a giraffe here and there in it. What sound does a giraffe make by the way?"  Out of Eisings growing popularity in his own country, numerous liveshows took place. He played during the Virus festival in Eindhoven, the Dutch Electronic Arts Festival in Rotterdam, Eurosonic and Noorderzon in Groningen, and for the dutch VPRO radio (all 2003). And more.

Where the previous years were so full of new Kettel releases, fans must wait a little longer this year. Scheduled are the Look at This EP on Kracfive (mentioned above), and a brand new DuB 12" entitled 'Cuddle And Then Leave', containing the newest Kettel music. Previews and infosheets promise an evolved own style that explores jazz and classical music. This EP says daylight in october 2003. In the works is a new album for DuB.

Kettel has been playing piano since he was a tiny tot. His first compositions were made using pen and paper. Electronic composition expanded his possibilities, like he says, "the ultimate way of making every sound ever". Yet electronic experiments with gear and sonic hiccups is not his thing: "I'd rather write an opera or symphony once. I want to get rid of the extreme repetition that characterizes most electronic music. It is a process." The use of acoustic instruments is a new thing in his music. According to Eising music is about beauty, emotion and entertainment: "I know the whole world says it, but I say it three times louder. Every music without beauty is noise to me."
